Airman & Family Readiness Center
Phone: 882-9060
The AFRC is the cornerstone of the Eglin family support system, helping Airmen and families enhance their readiness and quality of life. Active duty military members from all services and their family members, Guard and Reserve members and their dependents, retired military personnel and their family members, and Department of Defense civilians are eligible. All services are free. The AFRC also helps commanders and base leaders meet their responsibilities for the health and welfare of military families and single members.
There is a direct relationship between a member’s ability to successfully accomplish a mission, and the quality of
life their family experiences. Because of this relationship, many programs and policies are available to promote a positive family environment. Located in Building 205, the AFRC offers workshops and information on financial management, relocation assistance, employment for family members, special family member needs and military transitions. Their service is aimed at making each user of the center feel valued and supported. An essential aspect of creating a comfortable and non-threatening environment is the staff’s protection of privacy of what individual users disclose to them within the parameters of Air Force regulations. The AFRC is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and can be reached by calling 882-9060.

Air Force Enlisted Village
When Airmen marry, their spouses become part of the Air Force, too. They may not wear the uniform, but spouses wait through the deployments, make the change-of-station moves and experience all the other trials of military family life. The Air Force Enlisted Village recognizes these spouses’ commitments by providing homes to the widows of enlisted Air Force retirees.
For more than 30 years, this non-profit, one-of-a-kind organization has allowed indigent widows to live among their peers, sharing memories of Air Force life without the stigma normally associated with subsidized housing facilities. Dire need widows have priority and none are refused assistance due to financial status. The AFEV encompasses two independent living communities, Bob Hope Village and Teresa Village; and a new assisted living residence, Hawthorn House. Bob Hope Village and Hawthorn House are located in Shalimar, near Eglin, and Teresa Village is in Fort Walton Beach.
Former Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Jim Binnicker is the President and Chief Executive Officer for the AFEV. “When a new resident moves in, I tell her ‘Welcome home.’ The residents all have the common bond of being part of the Air Force

family. We have the ‘Mom Rule’ here. We treat our residents like we would want someone to treat our own mothers.”

Since Teresa Village opened in 1975, and Bob Hope Village in 1985, more than 1,500 widows and surviving spouses ages 55 to 104 have had a safe haven to call home. Since Hawthorn House opened in 2005, widows can remain with their Air Force family when they can no longer live independently.
Although the Village’s main focus is Air Force widows, they also accept surviving spouses from the other four branches of the military. In addition, temporary housing and services are available to spouses of enlisted members who are killed or who die on active-duty, or to military members and their families during natural disasters. Adult dependents – typically parents of active duty members or their spouses – are eligible for permanent housing on a space-available basis.
More information on the Air Force Enlisted Village is available at their web site, www.afenlistedwidows.org; by e-mail to afef@afenlistedfoundation.org, or call 651-3766.
Pet Welfare
Pet Welfare is a no-kill animal shelter located on Eglin. Operating since 1982, the shelter accepts dogs and cats from active-duty and retired military members and Department of Defense civilians who are unable to continue caring for their pets. The shelter houses and cares for the pet until a suitable home can be found.
The shelter houses approximately 20 to 25 dogs and 70 to 75 cats and adopts more than 400 pets out a year.
All animals have current shots and tests and must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
Pet Welfare is totally funded by donations, receiving no monetary support from the base, and is operated by an all-volunteer staff. Volunteers are always needed to do a variety of jobs such as feeding, bathing and cleaning up after the animals. Also, there is always plenty of time to hold and snuggle all the wonderful dogs and cats. The shelter is open Monday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information about adopting an animal or volunteering, call 678-5066 or drop by to visit. The shelter is located just past the Eglin Recycling Center. Pets may be viewed on their Web site at www.petwelfare.org.
